Why do gay couples say they cannot get married?

Of course they can. What makes people think a marriage is not a marriage unless it has been given the blessing by Congress?

This goes for religious people too, a marriage between you, your partner and God. You can be married without the state recognizing it. If you are truly religious, you won't care about that stuff.

If you were in a poor country with a corrupt government, it does not mean you are any less married that a couple in America.

I think it is a sad reflection of our time. People are so dependent on government.Why do gay couples say they cannot get married?
There are over a 1,000 rights that married couples get FROM THE GOVERNMENT that unmarried couples don't get.

You can call marriage ';religious'; all you want, but the fact is, the church doesn't hand out those kind of rights. They make adoption easier, they make inheritance easier, and they allow for visitation rights in the hospital if something terrible happens.

It's all about equality! Straight couples get to choose if they want to be united civilly, religiously, or both. You're saying that gay couples should be happy with only one of those options! That isn't equal at all. =DWhy do gay couples say they cannot get married?
there's also a lot of legal rights that comes with marriage. for example in some places, if someone is dying in a hospital only family is allowed to be with them in their final moments. at least this is what i have heard
The only part of marriage I care about is the legal benefits, I don't care about the religious crap
I disagree. Marriage by definition is legal contract. That's the whole frigging point here -- to get benefits and rights granted to other couples.
I hope you're not married and don't get the benefits of it since, ';people are so dependent on the government.';
It is not Congress's blessing we want, it's the legal benefits awarded to others and denied to us.
I've written that in my local newspaper. They can even have it recorded with the county. So go for it!
Marriage was and always will be designated for a man and a woman.Period.
