The fairy-tale romances...
Thank you!Who are the best romantic couples in literature and the movies?
If you're talking truly romantic, it's very hard to beat the story of Jim and Della in O Henry's wonderful story ';The Gift of the Magi';. They're a couple I've always remembered.
They were married and had very little money. Only had 2 possessions in the world that they treasured - one was Della's beautiful hair and one was the gold pocket watch given to Jim by his grandfather. One Christmas, with money very tight, they each make the supreme sacrifice for the other.
Jim sells his beloved pocket watch to buy Della beautiful tortoiseshell combs for her hair - only to arrive home to find that Della has cut her hair and sold it in order to buy Jim a chain for his pocket watch. Both gifts now useless and yet meaning everything.
I think it would be hard to find a more romantic couple - especailly at Christmas time.Who are the best romantic couples in literature and the movies?

Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice because they come from such different backrounds and have such different personalities yet they fall in love!
In literature, I'd have to go with Cathy and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. Even though they were not related, they were raised as brother and sister, which makes the relationship more intense, unusual and intimate than normal and their obssession for each other continues beyond the grave.
As for movies, Danny and Sandy in Grease are hard to beat. I also like Jack and Rose in Titanic.
Romeo and Juliet it must be, the star-crossed lovers who fell in love with night. My reason: the language of their love!
';It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night
Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear...';
';And when I shall die, take him and cut him up in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will fall in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun.';

Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth in Persuasion by Jane Austen. Their love for one another survives absence and heartbreak. It is Austen's most mature and poignant book, and the relationship between Anne and Wentworth is believable and moving.
Romeo and Juliet... without a speck of doubt.
